Francophone Games Results

It has been a week since the return of seven Varsity Reds' wrestlers from Nice, France. And, after finally catching up on all of my school work, I am able to post some in depth results.

Day 1: Three wrestlers from UNB in the men's 84kg, men's 66kg, and women's 55kg.

- Grayson St-Laurent competing in the men's 84kg wrestled fellow Canadian, Alex Brown-Theriault. A tough first round match-up, St-Laurent conceded 0-8 and did not come back in the repichage.
- Morgan St-Laurent also had a tough first round match up in the 66kg men's division falling 0-7 to Pawel Albinowski of Poland. He was also not brought back into the repichage.
- Samantha Stewart won the Silver medal in the women's 55kg weight category. She defeated Isabelle Eleonore Kanga of Ivory Coast in the first round 0-7 and a pin. In the semi-finals Stewart faced off against fellow Canadian, Brianne Barry. Stewart defeated Barry 5-1 to move into the final against France. Stewart ended up conceding 0-8 in the final against Tatiana Debien of France.

Day 2: Two wrestlers from UNB in the women's 59kg and men's 96kg.

- Brittany Dillman faced off against SafiĆ©tou Goudiaby of Senegal in the women's 59kg weight category. She fell 0-8 and did not advance.
- Thomas MacRae won the Bronze medal in the men's 96kg category. MacRae won his first match 4-3 against Messie Mata Kamalandua of Congo to move into the semi-finals. There MacRae faced off against fellow Canadian Riley Otto where MacRae was defeated 0-8. Brought back into the repichage, MacRae won the bronze medal 6-2 against Abdou Ngom of Senegal.

Day 3: Two wrestlers from UNB in the men's 120kg and men's 74kg.

- Charles Thoms won the Bronze medal in the men's 120kg category. Thoms defeated Canada-Quebec team member Patrick Okpalugo to move into the semi-final. There he fell 0-9 to Senegal's Thiaka Faye. Brought back into the repichage, Thoms then won the bronze medal bout 9-1 against Zakaria Echiheb of Morocco.
- Shawn Daye-Finley won the Bronze medal in the men's 74kg weight class. Daye-Finley won his first match against Brou Arnaud Kouadio of the Ivory Coast by fall to move into the semi-finals. He conceded 3-10 to Zelimkhan Khadjiev of France but was brought back into the repichage. He won his bronze medal bout 5-2 against Morocco's Mustapha Selloum.

 The next tournament on the schedule is the Concordia Invitational in Montreal on October 27th.
